The new cycle of the Weekday Lectionary starts on Monday 2nd November. This PDF gives you 4 weeks of reflections, together with a short guide to interpreting the book of Revelation.

Each week prints on two sides of A4. While you can read these digitally, I recommend printing so that you are not distracted by all the other things on your device!

The Weekday Lectionary essentially starts again four weeks before Advent.

That means Monday 2nd November is a great time to start using these Daily Bible Reflections. And with Bible Sunday (the Last Sunday after Trinity) on 25th October, now is a great time to encourage others to get into the Bible.

The first set of Reflections for this ‘new year’

Covering Monday 2nd November to Saturday 28th November, i.e. the four weeks before Advent.

In the Old Testament we read Daniel, then start in Isaiah from chapter 40. The Lectionary will take us through Isaiah 40-66 (“The Book of Comfort”) over Advent and Christmas.

In the New Testament we read the book of Revelation.

A brief guide to the book of Revelation

Usually I focus on the Old Testament reading but, for the five weeks that the Lectionary goes through Revelation, that is my focus - on the basis that most Christians get confused by this book!

The PDF document with the reflections contains a bonus 2-page introduction to Revelation, setting out my basic approach. It begins like this:

In a future post I will discuss the Lectionary but for now all you need to know is this: Monday 2nd November is a great time to start!

Short but not shallow

Six reflections (Monday to Saturday) fit on two sides of A4. This makes them easy to print. These reflections are relatively short but they are not shallow! They are rooted in the Bible readings for each day, and connect you with the big themes of the Scriptures.

Equipping you to pray

The prayer point each day takes you through the Lord’s Prayer. It connects part of the Lord’s Prayer (for example “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven”) with the Bible passages. It models a way of using the Lord’s Prayer - expanding on each of the requests in the prayer, and also models the importance of praying in response to God’s Word.

]]><![CDATA[The Old Testament: all about Jesus]]>https://www.jesusisgoodnews.com/p/the-old-testament-all-about-jesushttps://www.jesusisgoodnews.com/p/the-old-testament-all-about-jesusMon, 19 Oct 2026 21:05:29 GMTThe Old Testament is given to make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Yet so many Christians struggle with the Old Testament. Not long after starting as Vicar at St George’s Church in Shrewsbury, I began a sermon series on the book of Daniel. Very quickly I was told that no-one could remember hearing sermons on the Old Testament, and some people had been at the church for decades.

After his resurrection, Jesus’ identity was withheld from the disciples walking on the road to Emmaus. He wanted them - and us - to see him in the pages of the Scriptures. Soon he would ascend to heaven, but the church can see Jesus in the Bible.

Jesus was not re-interpreting the Bible. He did not say “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to understand that the events of the last few days have finally provided the hermeneutical key to the Old Testament that means you must re-read the Old Testament in a completely new way.”

The Jesus Is Good News Daily Reflections will get you reading both the Old Testament and the New Testament. But the focus is generally the Old Testament, so that you can learn to see Jesus Christ on every page of the Scriptures.
