The Old Testament is given to make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Yet so many Christians struggle with the Old Testament. Not long after starting as Vicar at St George’s Church in Shrewsbury, I began a sermon series on the book of Daniel. Very quickly I was told that no-one could remember hearing sermons on the Old Testament, and some people had been at the church for decades.
After his resurrection, Jesus’ identity was withheld from the disciples walking on the road to Emmaus. He wanted them - and us - to see him in the pages of the Scriptures. Soon he would ascend to heaven, but the church can see Jesus in the Bible.
Jesus was not re-interpreting the Bible. He did not say “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to understand that the events of the last few days have finally provided the hermeneutical key to the Old Testament that means you must re-read the Old Testament in a completely new way.”
The Jesus Is Good News Daily Reflections will get you reading both the Old Testament and the New Testament. But the focus is generally the Old Testament, so that you can learn to see Jesus Christ on every page of the Scriptures.
